Originario de Madagascar, este árbol siempre verde y muy aromático puede alcanzar los 5 m de altura. En malgache, Mandravasarotra significa “quien aleja el mal”. Esta planta es la más utilizada por las poblaciones del oeste de la isla. En esta región de Sakalava, se la denomina Motrobeatiagnana o Motrobeatianina, que significa “gran fuego en las entrañas” porque toda la parte aérea de la planta tiene un sabor picante. También en función de los diferentes dialectos malgaches se la denomina Fanalamangidy, “que quita el amargor”, Mangidymanitra, “que huele a amargo”, Sakarivohazo, “madera de jengibre” o Sakaihazo, “madera de Pimienta”.
